A die is struck on a copper or iron sheet. Copper being a softer metal will produce a higher resolution. The lapel pin is then cut and plated in gold, silver, copper or nickel. After plating the colors are added by hand and then the plate is baked to set the colors. To prevent long term fading or cracking, an epoxy dome coating can be applied. This method is similar to cloisonné but at a lower price.
